SOUTHERN MALDIVES

Addu City, the southernmost atoll in the Maldives, is approximately 478 kilometers south of Malé. With a population of around 30,901, it comprises islands like Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Feydhoo, and Gan. Gan Island houses Gan International Airport, serving as a major entry point for the region. During World War 2, Gan Island was used as a British Royal Air Force military facility.

Overview of the assembly


The inaugural Citizens Climate Assembly in the Maldives took place at Addu. 37 individuals, from a range of ages and viewpoints, took part in the Assembly. The assembly was split into three days by to guarantee that all Citizens could effectively participate in the assembly. To further facilitate assembly discussions, each individual was organized into a small home group. On the first day Citizens primarily engaged in sessions with environmentalists and experts. These experts’ discussions was themed in to three areas; environmental law, environmental preservation and conservation, and climate change. All the citizens got to participate based on their preference and at the end of the day they went back to their home groups and discussed about what they go to learn. This was the first and initial exposure the Citizens got to formulate some ideas for their recommendations.


On the second day, the participants discussed and exchanged opinions and wrote down what the citizens wanted. These were further developed into recommendations through discussion. Using these ideas and wishes a document of recommendation was written. Mapping activities, stakeholder metrics, and the time line of the neighborhood were made in order to reach this point. On the Third day Voting was conducted on the recommendations. Addu City Citizens' Climate Assembly received a total of 53 requests which were voted on and prioritized through a google form after the assembly. The findings of these results will be published by ECOCARE Maldives.
